Poland vs Denmark
POLAND 1, DENMARK 3
Sunday January 17, 2010
This was the opening match of the 40th King’s Cup in Thailand — a tournament consisting of four teams. The other two teams in the tournament are Thailand and Singapore.
Poland and Denmark fielded their B squads for this one.
Poland started the match slowly, and gave up the first goal in the 22nd minute.
The goal came from Soren Rieks after Polish keeper Mariusz Pawelek made the dreadful decision of coming way off his line for the ball on a Danish throw in.
Pawelek’s woeful clearance attempt managed only to get a fingertip to the thrown in ball, leaving the ball loose in the area with the goal empty.
It was then an easy task for Denmark and Soren Rieks to put the ball in for the score.
But Poland came right back.
Poland shook off their slow start and only four minutes later got the equalizer.
Slawomir Peszko was the scorer.
An unmarked Peszko received the ball with quite a bit of distance between himself and the goal, but with little hesitation he unleashed a rocket of a shot that the Danish keeper Kim Christensen could only get a finger to as it roared into the back of the net.
Poland thoroughly dominated the rest of an action packed first half, however they were unable to show anything for it.
They came very close though in the 33rd minute — hitting woodwork twice during a chaotic goal mouth scene, including once from only a meter out.
The second half was a complete reversal of the first, with Denmark in complete control.
Only three minutes after the interval, the Danes took the lead with their second goal.
A short cross from Soren Rieks in the penalty area was neatly back heeled into the goal by Morten Rasmussen.
Then a long cross from the corner was headed in by Jesper Bech for the third Danish goal, coming in the 60th minute.
It looked like Denmark had a fourth goal in the 71st minute when they put the ball into the Polish goal, but offsides canceled it.
